Title: On Golden Pond
Author(s): Ernest Thompson
Description: This is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. He is a retired professor, nearing eighty, with heart palpitations and a failing memory-but still as tart-tongued, observant and eager for life as ever.

Ethel, ten years younger, and the perfect foil for Norman, delights in all the small things that have enriched and continue to enrich their long life together. They are visited by their divorced, middle-aged daughter and her dentist fiance, who then go off to Europe, leaving his teenage son behind for the summer. The boy quickly becomes the "grandchild" the elderly couple have longed for, and as Norman revels in taking his ward fishing and thrusting good books at him, he also learns some lessons about modern teenage awareness-and slang-in return.

In the end, as the summer wanes, so does their brief idyll, and in the final, deeply moving moments of the play, Norman and Ethel are brought even closer together by the incidence of a mild heart attack (Norman).

Description
Norman Thayer M Lead 55 80 His health is good with a touch of arthritis and palpitations. Flirting with senility but he knows it and plays it to the hilt.
Ethel Thayer F Lead 50 75 Norman's Wife. Small and energetic. She's the opposite of Norman in many ways. She fills the empty spaces when he grows quiet.
Charlie Martin M Supporting 35 50 A big round man. Weather beaten face, smiling eyes, strong Maine accent. A laugher but not "deficient". In his own rustic simple way he is charming.
Chelsea Thayer Wayne F Supporting 35 45 Daughter of Norman and Ethel. Quite pretty. Maybe a bit heavy, athletic looking, tan, a nervous type, something dark about her but she has her father's humor.
Billy Ray M Supporting 12 16 Short, flippant, but only to cover his awkwardness. He is eager and bright. His hair is long. His posture terrible.
Bill Ray M Supporting 35 50 Beau to Chelsea, father to Billy. Tends to be serious but has a good sense of humor when he remembers to use it.
