Avon Players Youth Theatre

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit, a small human-like creature of Middle Earth, a land full of dwarves, elves, trolls, and wizards. He is recruited by 13 dwarves to journey to the Lonely Mountain and help steal back their fortune from the dragon Smaug. Although he is a simple creature who prefers his comfortable home to the idea of adventure, he finds himself better at adventure than he thought. This story comes several years before the LORD OF THE RINGS saga, very recently a major motion picture trilogy featuring Bilbo’s nephew Frodo.

Avon Players presents one youth production every year, alternating between musicals like Honk Jr.! and nonmusicals like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The production is open to kids in 6th grade through 12th grade. The show and its director and producer are typically selected in January or February of the current season and announced on the website shortly thereafter, with audition notices posted on the website and sent to our mailing list and local papers by early April. Auditions are in late April or early May, with the show being performed in late June.
Kids who do not wish to be performers or who are not cast at auditions but still want to be involved may contact the producer or director listed on the audition form. There are opportunities to help build, work backstage, or take a production role like stage manager or sound technician.
Performers cast in the youth production must pay a $35 “Youth Theatre Program Experience” membership fee and a production fee to be determined based on the size and scope of the particular production. For Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this fee was $20, bringing the total participation cost to $55.
Junior Membership
Avon Players occasionally requires child actors for its main stage shows; i.e., for such shows as Annie, Oliver!, and The Music Man . These roles and the ages being considered are listed in the audition form for the particular production.
Performers age 17 and under cast in a main stage production must pay a $35 Junior Membership Fee. Should they be cast in a second or third main stage production, there is no additional cost. However, the Avon Players Executive Board will determine each season whether this $35 shall be counted as the “Youth Theatre Program Experience” cost, should a junior member also be cast in the youth production, after considering the number of child actor roles available during the regular season and the requirements of the youth production budget.
